As a first time watcher of the movie, you might have picked up on the fact that flashes and cameras were pretty commonplace. However, maybe you are confused on why they are so important. Well, you’ve come to the right place. ![]() irst, let’s focus on cameras. So we know that Chris Washington is an avid (and seemingly successful) photographer. And like many photographers, he often feels that he sees the world differently through his camera lens – maybe even a little clearer. Since he is a photographer, carrying his camera around isn’t weird at all, and it is actually very crucial to the story. Through his lens, Chris sees different parts of the family’s property. When he does this, one of the major instances of flash arises. Chris sees Logan, one of the workers on the farm, and tries to take a picture of him. However, the flash from his camera phone sets Logan into a CRAZE, awakens him from hypnosis, and makes him try to save Chris. However, while Chris is most definitely put off by this occurrence, he still stays around the farm. ![]() Not only is Chris in deep connection with his camera – it is symbolic of how he sees the world. When Jim Hudson said, “I want your eyes man. I want those things you see through,” he is referring to the way in which Chris lives his life and sees the world. He knows that Chris is a great photographer and wants to take the best parts of him away. One other importance of cameras is the commentary it plays on modern life. For many African Americans that are subjected to police violence, camera phones and recordings are playing a very important role in shedding light on the tragedy. Without these recordings, it is likely that police brutality and other caveats of systemic racism would go unpublicized and mostly unbothered. Jordan Peele likely made the cameras important in Get Out as a way to emphasize that. Now for the flashes. While it is obvious that the camera flash creates a reaction in the characters, it is sometimes difficult to see why. The characters that react poorly to the flash are those that had been lobotomized. Scientifically, its probably a glitch in the brain synapses, but symbolically, these people are momentarily seeing the light and losing their minds. Want to know more?
